How many words can it find?

There are 240,732 words in our database.

Why didn’t it find my word?

The word might not be in our database! A common reason for this is that word may have a regional spelling variation (e.g. ize/ise).

There’s a problem finding words that contain accented characters. For example, a search for “cafe”, doesn’t currently find the word “café” — we’re working on a fix for this, but it’s not ready yet.

Why do some words have no dictionary definition?

We currently provide 182,698 dictionary definitions, this covers roughly 75% of words that we find. We’d like to provide a definition for every word, and we’re hoping to provide more comprehensive definitions in the future, possibly from the WordNet project.

Why do the dictionary definitions seem a bit “old-fashioned”?

The word definitions are almost 100 years old! They come from the 1913 edition of Webster’s Revised Unabridged Dictionary, the copyright on this work has lapsed and is consequently free for us to use.
